Not a government website. We aren't affiliated with Suffolk County, Nassau County, any town, or New York State, and we can't approve or speed up a grant. Grants go through the official programs, Suffolk SIP (Reclaim Our Water) and Nassau SEPTIC, and the installer you hire handles the grant process with you.
No Town rebate (as of our last check)
We looked for a separate Town of Brookhaven septic rebate and didn't find one (checked 2026-10-19). That means the County and State grants are the money available here. If the Town starts a program, we'll add it.
Forge River sewers: Mastic and Shirley
The County's Forge River sewer project in Mastic–Shirley runs from just west of the William Floyd Parkway east to the Forge River, with a new treatment plant serving nearly 1,900 parcels. If your home is inside that district, you'll be connecting to sewer instead, and the septic grant doesn't apply. Outside the boundary, the rest of Mastic, Shirley and the Moriches are prime grant territory: shallow groundwater draining to Moriches Bay and the Great South Bay.
Carmans River: Brookhaven's own nitrogen rule
In 2015 Brookhaven became the first Long Island town to set a 3 parts-per-million nitrogen standard, stricter than the County's 10 ppm, for properties in the Carmans River watershed with intermediate-flow systems. That rule targets larger (non-single-family) systems, but it tells you how seriously the Town treats nitrogen along the Carmans.
North Shore vs. South Shore lots
Brookhaven runs from Long Island Sound to the ocean. On the North Shore (Stony Brook, Setauket, Miller Place, Rocky Point) groundwater is often deep, which makes conventional leaching easier but puts lots far from the priority zones. Along the South Shore bays it's shallow, which raises priority for the grant and the odds of needing a pressurized shallow drainfield. The Pine Barrens middle (Ridge, Manorville, Yaphank) has its own clearing and land-use rules your designer will check.
Installers near Brookhaven
Six SIP-approved installers on the County's September 2026 list are based in the Town of Brookhaven: in Rocky Point, Brookhaven hamlet, East Patchogue (two), Moriches and Manorville. We don't publish or rank them. When you send a request, it goes to licensed installers who serve your area, and only SIP-approved ones for grant jobs.

Brookhaven cesspool & septic FAQ
I live in Shirley. Can I get the septic grant?
Only if your property is outside the Forge River sewer district and not in a proposed district. Check your address with the County before you pay for a design. Homes inside the district connect to sewer instead.
Does Brookhaven Town give its own septic rebate?
We looked for a separate Town of Brookhaven septic rebate and didn't find one (checked 2026-10-19). That means the County and State grants are the money available here. If the Town starts a program, we'll add it.
Do I need a Town permit too?
Your design professional files with the County Office of Wastewater Management and identifies any town or village permits needed. Incorporated villages like Port Jefferson, Patchogue and Bellport have their own building departments.
