What the law actually requires
Plenty of contractor sites get this wrong. Here's what Suffolk's code says, with sources.
Do you have to install an I/A system?
Required for new construction and major renovation since 2021. For a failed cesspool on an existing home, conventional septic is still the minimum.

How much does cesspool replacement cost on Long Island?
A conventional replacement (septic tank plus leaching rings) typically runs $10,000–$25,000, and more on hard sites. A nitrogen-reducing I/A system runs about $15,000–$30,000+ installed before grants (East End reporting: $35,000–$40,000). In Suffolk, County and State grants can cover up to $45,000 of an I/A system.
Can I replace my cesspool with a new cesspool?
No. Suffolk banned cesspools in new construction in 1973 and closed the replace-in-kind loophole; since July 1, 2019 the minimum replacement is a septic tank ahead of a leaching structure, registered with the County Health Department by a licensed contractor.
Do I have to install an expensive I/A system?
For new construction and major renovations in Suffolk, yes (since July 1, 2021). For a failed cesspool on an existing home, a conventional septic system is still the code minimum. But the grants only pay for I/A systems, which often makes I/A the cheaper choice out of pocket.
Are you the county grant program or an installer?
Neither. We're an independent referral service. We connect you with licensed installers (SIP-approved ones for Suffolk grant jobs), and the installer you hire handles the grant paperwork with you. In Suffolk the County pays the grant to the installer directly. There's no fee to you for the referral.
Not a government website. We aren't affiliated with Suffolk County, Nassau County, any town, or New York State, and we can't approve or speed up a grant. Grants go through the official programs, Suffolk SIP (Reclaim Our Water) and Nassau SEPTIC, and the installer you hire handles the grant process with you.
