Full County and State rules, the 8-step process and a grant estimator are on the Suffolk septic grant guide.
Not a government website. We aren't affiliated with Suffolk County, Nassau County, any town, or New York State, and we can't approve or speed up a grant. Grants go through the official programs, Suffolk SIP (Reclaim Our Water) and Nassau SEPTIC, and the installer you hire handles the grant process with you.
Wells and septic share the same groundwater
Shelter Island relies heavily on private wells drawing from a shallow aquifer, the same groundwater septic systems discharge into, which is why the County ranks the island at the top of its priority list and why the Town funds well relocation when an upgrade forces one.
Town rebate rules
Apply to the County and State programs first. The Town's Water Quality Improvement Advisory Board reviews applications and recommends funding to the Town Board. The rebate is for voluntary upgrades: it isn't available when an upgrade is required, for example for new construction or alterations that increase wastewater flow.
Ferry logistics change the price
Every excavator, tank and truckload of fill comes over on the North or South Ferry, and that shows up in quotes. One SIP-approved installer on the County's September 2026 list is based on the island, which can help with scheduling and mobilization costs.
The island sits in the Peconic Estuary, where the Peconic Estuary Partnership has announced up to $500 a year toward I/A maintenance after the 3 grant-funded years (check that it's open).
Installers near Shelter Island
One SIP-approved installer on the County's September 2026 list is based on Shelter Island; several others serve it from the South Fork. We don't publish or rank them. When you send a request, it goes to licensed installers who serve your area, and only SIP-approved ones for grant jobs.

Shelter Island cesspool & septic FAQ
What does an I/A system cost on Shelter Island?
Local reporting put it at roughly $35,000–$40,000, and $50,000 or more once landscaping and a well move are included. Grants can cover most of that, but ferry and site costs are real.
Can I get the Town rebate if my upgrade is required for a renovation?
No. The Town rebate is for voluntary upgrades. If a renovation that increases flow triggers the upgrade, the Town money doesn't apply, though County and State eligibility is decided separately.
